Normally, red blood cells are round and flexible, moving smoothly through vessels. In sickle cell anemia, some become rigid crescent shapes, obstructing blood flow and reducing oxygen levels. Hemoglobin-S cells have a shorter lifespan, leading to severe red blood cell shortage (anemia).
